Chemical Process Engineer

Frontline BioEnergy is engineering revolutionary technology and installing industrial systems in the renewable energy industry.  We are looking for a Chemical Process Engineer to assist in the engineering, design, and drafting of industrial equipment and processes to convert waste and biomass into electric power, fuels, and chemicals.  Come join our dynamic, growing team!

The Chemical Process Engineer provides judgement and analysis for the design, development, and implementation of chemical and thermal processes and systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a key contributor for engineering design and analysis of chemical and thermal processes, performing manual and computational calculations
  • Develop PFDs and P&IDs for new chemical processing units
  • Provide written communication to customers and co-workers for documents such as progress updates, process narratives for control of complex systems, operating procedures for startup or normal operation of equipment, and assistance in writing government and commercial proposals
  • Collaborate with other engineers and technicians in the specification, test, and design of industrial equipment and systems
  • Collects production data and applies standard scientific and statistical methods to analyze, document, and diagram production processes
  • Develops and optimizes continuous production and manufacturing processes to achieve the output, quality, and cost goals of the organization
  • Recommends changes or upgrades to equipment, work methods, or other aspects of the process to improve efficiency and utilization of resources including labor, energy, and raw materials
  • Identifies process issues and devises technical solutions to resolve
  • Assist in specification of equipment, and to identify suppliers, review quotes, and manage suppliers and schedules to ensure high-quality, on-time installation
  • Participate in pilot plant operations
  • Support job site construction check-out, commissioning, and start-up activities
  • Regularly perform duties safely and complete all required, basic safety training.

Essential qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience in hands-on engineering and/or process design of chemical processes and equipment
  • Demonstrated skills in performing calculations for design and analysis of heat exchangers, mass and energy balance, chemical process and reactor equipment calculations (space time, reaction kinetics, equilibrium, residence time distribution, heterogeneous catalysis, specific surface area), pressure vessels and piping design, flow and head loss, process modeling of thermal systems and steam generating equipment, and process modeling of chemical conversion equipment
  • Excellent writing skills for such documents as process narratives, performance specifications, start-up, and operating procedures
  • Detail oriented – capable of designing completely functional equipment and systems
  • Analysis experience in such areas as fluid flow, heat transfer, and chemical reaction engineering
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and capable of leading teams
  • Ability to multi-task, working with several engineers and designers on multiple projects
  • Demonstrated initiative and drive to complete tasks well and to anticipate and solve problems with little supervision
  • Must be highly motivated, eager to learn, and committed to meeting our customers’ needs

Desired qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering
  • 3+ years of experience working in a chemical manufacturing plant
  • Experience in developing Process Flow Diagrams, P&ID’s, and control system architecture
  • Solid understanding of standard fabrication processes for chemical process equipment and piping
  • Experience with AutoCAD and the drafting of process engineering documents
  • Experience with AspenTM Plus process modeling software
  • Experience in the process design and construction of large industrial equipment or facilities, such as an ethanol plant (dry mill or wet mill), petroleum refinery, chemical production facility, or steam power plant
  • Experience with refractory lined vessels, high temperature reaction equipment, fluid bed reactors, boilers, large support structures, tanks, pressure vessels, heat exchanger systems, piping, filters, bag houses and solid material handling equipment
  • Experience working and communicating with controls system engineers and technicians
  • Ability to lead new process development engineering projects

Starting salary commensurate with experience.  Frontline BioEnergy offers competitive total compensation, and support is available for relocation expenses.
